Banafsheh Modaressi is an Iranian-Canadian visual artist and filmmaker based in Vancouver. Combining her design expertise and experience with a variety of media, Banafsheh’s works probe the nuances of daily life with a focus on tracing the impact of major political occurrences and the oft-ignored undercurrents of violence that inform our daily experience.

Banafsheh has completed multiple international residencies including at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, the Tokyo Artist Residency, and the Golden Apricot Artist Residency Program in Yerevan. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. A few of the galleries that have exhibited her work include the Crous Art Gallery, in Paris; the Toronto Queen Art Gallery; the Tehran Modern Art Museum; and the Blanche Art Gallery, Quebec.

Banafsheh’s films have also been screened in major international festivals, including the National Film Board of Canada, the Cannes Film Festival, the Paulawy International Festival, Paris Short Film Festival, the Golden Panda, Goldenrod Art Festival, and the Mumbai Film Festival.

Banafsheh received her MFA in Visual Communication and Graphic Design at the Art University of Tehran prior to continuing her education in Audio Video Production at the Sorbonne University Paris I. Banafsheh is also a passionate art educator. Her teaching career began with a two-year tenure at the Art University of Tehran. She currently teaches at Vancouver Film School and InFocus Film School.

Banafshe’s painting practice is dedicated to capturing the ephemeral beauty and wonder of daily life. She is interested in the subtle profundity of private thoughts and experiences that are not deemed worthy of a social media post. She commonly incorporates found objects and discarded scraps (such as purchase receipts, figments of discarded screenplay drafts, and old magazine clippings) in her expressively painted canvases as artifacts of daily life. Banafsheh’s deeply personal records of daily joys, desires, and frustrations strike a balance between candidness and complexity, demanding contemplation.
