Leila Modarresi is a visual artist based in Paris, Berlin, and Vancouver. Her works deal with contemporary global conflict, collective memory (art as a medium to resolve and heal the collective memories of trauma), and the notions of space and time as elements beyond our control. Through her practice, Leila seeks to offer a new perspective on daily life and give new direction and function to the banalities of life.
Leila has presented her works in various solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Iran, and across Europe. She has also participated in several international artist residencies. Leila holds a Ph.D. in ‘Visual Arts and Musicology’ from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. As a professor of art, she has taught multiple courses, including technical drawing, painting, and Sculpture.
Leila has also illustrated three books for children written by Pari Zangeneh, the distinguished soprano singer.
The Memory Sheet Series is a collection of aged copper tiles that appear to have absorbed time into their etched crevices and layers of rust, turning into repositories of collective memory. This work exemplifies Leila’s fascination with old objects. Using objects vessels of historical resonance, she aims to create opportunities for the healing process of retrieving forgotten memories and uncovering buried truths.
